Historical context

Valentinian I was proclaimed Roman emperor in 364 following the death of Jovian, ruling until 375 as founder of the Valentinian dynasty. After briefly governing the empire as a whole from February to March of 364, he appointed his brother Valens to administer the East while he controlled the West. This solidus—a standard gold denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus—was struck between AD 364 and AD 367 at the mint of Arelate, a city of considerable importance located in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
