Historical context

Valentinian II was Roman emperor in the Western Roman Empire from AD 375 to 392, having been elevated to the imperial office at the age of four. After the defeat of the usurper Magnus Maximus by Theodosius I, Valentinian II was restored to power and ruled from Gaul from 388 until his death in 392. Struck between AD 388 and AD 392, this bronze piece was minted at Arelate (modern Arles), an important city situated in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
