Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 to 375, founding the Valentinian dynasty. After briefly governing the entire empire from February to March 364 following the death of Jovian, he appointed his brother Valens to rule the eastern half while retaining control of the western half. Valentinian conducted successful campaigns along the Rhine and Danube frontiers against groups including the Alamanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians.

This bronze AE3 denomination was issued under the authority of Valentinian I at the western mint of Arelate. While struck under Valentinian's administration, the coin honours his co-emperor, depicting Valens on the obverse alongside the legend "D N VALEN-S P F AVG". The reverse depicts an emperor dragging a captive with his right hand while holding a labarum in his left, accompanied by the inscription "GLORIA RO-MANORVM".
