Historical context

Valentinian I became Roman emperor in 364 following the death of Jovian and appointed his younger brother Valens as co-emperor, assigning him governance of the eastern half of the empire. Valens ruled the East from 364 until his death at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. This coin was minted under Valens at Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a flourishing city of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis.
