Reverse: Two emperors, nimbate, one smaller, seated, facing on throne, the one on right holding mappa in left hand and the two together holding globe, both emperors have legs draped. Behind, a Victory, below, palm-branch. Obverse legend: D N MAG MA-XIMVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: VICTOR-IA AVGG.

Historical context

Magnus Maximus was proclaimed emperor in Britannia in 383 and ruled as Roman emperor in the West from 383 to 388 after usurping the throne from Gratian. While Valentinian II initially retained Italy, Pannonia, Hispania, and Africa, Maximus invaded Italy in 387. This solidus was struck between AD 387 and AD 388 at Mediolanum, an important Roman city in Northern Italy that served as an informal capital of the Western Roman Empire.
