Historical context

Valentinian II was raised to the imperial office in AD 375 at four years of age, serving as a junior co-ruler alongside his older half-brother Gratian until 383. During this period, the imperial court was established at Mediolanum, an important city in northern Italy that later served as a Western Roman capital. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early 4th century, was struck at Mediolanum between AD 378 and AD 383.
