Historical context

Gratian, the eldest son of Valentinian I, inherited the Western Roman Empire following his father's death in 375. The East was governed by his uncle Valens, who had been appointed co-emperor by Valentinian I in 364. During Gratian's western rule, gold coinage was struck at Trier, which had earlier served as one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy. Valens subsequently died alongside much of the eastern Roman army fighting the Goths at the Battle of Adrianople on 9 August 378.
