Historical context

Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, initially as co-Augustus alongside his father Valentinian I and later alongside his half-brother Valentinian II. Following his father's death in 375, he governed the West, conducting campaigns across the Rhine and securing the surrender of the Lentienses before elevating Theodosius I to the eastern throne in 379.

This silver siliqua was produced at the mint of Trier. The siliqua was a small, thin silver coin produced from the fourth century onwards, applied by numismatic convention to pieces valued against the gold solidus. The obverse features Gratian with the inscription "D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG", while the reverse encloses the inscription "VOT/XV/MVLT/XX" within a laurel wreath.
