Historical context

Magnus Maximus ruled as Roman emperor in the West from 383 to 388 after usurping the throne from Gratian. Following his proclamation as emperor in Britannia in 383 and in Gaul the following year, he operated within the western provinces while Valentinian II held Italy, Pannonia, Hispania, and Africa. Maximus's reign ended following his invasion of Italy in 387 and his defeat by Theodosius I in 388.

Produced at the mint of Trier, this gold solidus represents the denomination introduced in the early fourth century as a replacement for the aureus. In Western Europe, the solidus served as the main gold coin of commerce throughout late Roman times. The obverse depicts Magnus Maximus with the title "D N MAG MA-XIMVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays two seated emperors jointly holding a globe beneath Victory and a palm-branch, inscribed with the legend "VICTOR-IA AVGG".
