Historical context
Magnus Maximus was Roman emperor in the West from 383 to 388, having usurped the throne from Emperor Gratian. Born in Gallaecia, he was proclaimed emperor in Britannia in 383 and established control over Gaul the following year, while Valentinian II held other western territories. Maximus ruled until 388, when his invasion of Italy prompted his defeat by Theodosius I at the Battle of Poetovio.
Struck at the mint of Trier, this bronze AE2 piece belongs to the imperial coinage of Magnus Maximus's regime in Gaul. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title in the legend "D N MAG MAX-IMVS P F AVG". The reverse combines the legend "REPARATIO-REIPVB" with an image of the emperor raising a kneeling turreted female while holding Victory on a globe.
