Period

ca. 2nd century CE, 117-138 CE

This necklace features an authentic Roman imperial silver denarius dating to the reign of Emperor Hadrian, issued between 117 and 138 CE. The coin is mounted in a modern custom-fitted 16-karat gold circular bezel, which is secured by a 14-karat gold push clasp.

The coin is displayed on a modern strand of violet-hued, ribbed glass beads individually knotted on cobalt-colored thread. The obverse of the denarius displays the laureate head of Hadrian facing right. The reverse features the inscription VICTORIA AVG and depicts Victory-Nemesis advancing to the left, holding a branch and raising a fold of drapery from her neck, symbolizing Roman justice and victory. The total length of the beaded strand is 22 inches, with the pendant measuring 0.7 inches in diameter.

The silver purity of the coin is noted as 96%, while the gold components range from 58% to 68% purity. The coin displays dark toning and patina, while the glass beads and setting represent a contemporary assembly.
