Historical context

Valerian ruled as Roman emperor from 253 to spring 260 AD, taking power during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century and naming his son Gallienus as co-emperor. His reign ended in catastrophe when he became the first Roman emperor to be captured in battle, taken by the Persian ruler Shapur I following the Battle of Edessa. This bronze coinage was produced during his joint rule at the city of Hadrianoi.
