Historical context

Pitane was an ancient Greek town and Aeolian settlement situated in Asia Minor on the bay of Elaea near the mouth of the river Evenus. During the Roman Imperial Period, the city struck civic coinage under Marcus Aurelius, who ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180. Marcus Aurelius acceded to the imperial throne in 161 alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Aurelius Verus following the death of Antoninus Pius.
