Historical context

This coin was struck by Pitane, an ancient town in the region of Aeolis in Asia Minor, situated on the bay of Elaea near the mouth of the river Evenus. The civic issue dates to the reign of Severus Alexander, the final Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty. Alexander succeeded his slain cousin Elagabalus in 222 at the age of 13, making him the youngest sole emperor of the Roman Empire. His reign lasted until March 235, when he and his mother Julia Avita Mamaea were assassinated during a military campaign against Germanic tribes.
