Historical context

Lucius Aurelius Verus was Roman emperor from 161 until his death in 169, ruling alongside his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Verus was adopted by Antoninus Pius in 138 before Marcus Aurelius raised him to co-emperor in 161, marking the first time the Roman Empire was ruled simultaneously by more than one emperor. This coin was issued during their joint reign by the city of Attaea in Mysia.
