Historical context

Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town situated opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river in northwestern Anatolia, in the region of Mysia. Commodus served as Roman co-emperor alongside his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 before ruling alone from 180 to 192. His sole reign, often considered the end of the Pax Romana, began around the time this civic bronze coin was struck between c. AD 180 and 182.
