Obverse: Laureate bust of Commodus, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑV ΚΑΙ Μ ΑVΡΗΛ ΚΟΜΜΟΔΟϹ. Reverse: Apollo naked, standing left, torso slightly bent, holding branch in his right hand, right foot resting on basis. In front of him a raven. Legend: ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΙΑΤΩΝ. Historical context

Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town located opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river in northwestern Anatolia. Commodus served as Roman co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 and ruled alone from 180 until his assassination in 192, a period traditionally marking the conclusion of the Pax Romana. This bronze civic issue was struck by the city during his early sole reign, dated to c. AD 180–182.
