Historical context

Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town in Mysia, situated opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river in northwestern Anatolia. The Roman emperor Septimius Severus ruled from 193 to 211, following the Year of the Five Emperors, and proclaimed his elder son Caracalla co-emperor in 198. This civic bronze issue from Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was struck during this joint rule between AD 198 and 211, depicting Caracalla on the obverse.
