Historical context
Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town situated opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river in northwestern Anatolia. Marcus Aurelius was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and was the final emperor of the Pax Romana. This civic bronze issue was struck under his authority at Apollonia ad Rhyndacum in Mysia, dating to c. AD 169–175 during a period marked by major conflicts such as the Marcomannic Wars.
