Historical context
Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town in northwestern Anatolia located opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river. Marcus Aurelius became Roman emperor in 161 following the death of his adoptive father, Antoninus Pius, initially ruling alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Verus. Although his reign formed the final part of the Pax Romana, Marcus Aurelius faced substantial military conflicts, including the Parthian War and the Marcomannic Wars.
