Historical context

Philip I, commonly known as Philip the Arab, reigned as Roman emperor from 244 to 249, ruling jointly from 247 with his son, Philip the Younger. In late 248, incursions and unrest along the frontier led to political instability, ending when Decius was acclaimed emperor and Philip was defeated and killed in 249. This bronze coin was struck in AD 249 at Viminacium, a major city, military camp, and provincial capital of Moesia Superior.
