Historical context

Galerius ruled as Roman emperor from 305 to 311, having previously served as caesar under Diocletian within the Tetrarchy. He became augustus following Diocletian's abdication in 305, navigating a turbulent era marked by the breakdown of the Tetrarchic system and conflicts with multiple usurpers. Under his imperial authority, coin production continued across provincial mints, including the mint at Heraclea.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced at Heraclea under Galerius's authority to acknowledge his subordinate ruler, Maximinus Daia. The obverse depicts Maximinus Daia with the title "GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES", recognising his standing as caesar. The reverse features a genius pouring liquid from a patera and holding a cornucopiae, paired with the legend "GENIO C-A-ESARIS" or "GENIO CA-ESARIS", honouring the protective spirit of the caesar.
