Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius served as Roman emperor from 306 to 312, exercising authority across Italy and North Africa with the backing of the Senate in Rome. He was not accepted as a legitimate ruler by fellow emperors, and the latter part of his reign was consumed by civil war until his death in 312. This coin was minted in the northeastern Italian city of Aquileia, a major urban centre founded as a Roman colony in 181 BC.
