Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under the authority of Valerius Licinianus Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During his reign, Licinius governed as the colleague and rival of Constantine I, co-authoring the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians before being defeated at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324.

Struck at the mint of Alexandria, the issue features an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Jupiter standing nude with a chlamys, sceptre, and a Victory on a globe, accompanied by an eagle holding a wreath, framed by the legend "IOVI CONSER-VATORI AVGG".
