Historical context
Magnus Magnentius, an imperial general of Germanic descent serving in Gaul, was acclaimed Augustus by the army on 18 January 350 to replace the unpopular emperor Constans. After quickly killing Constans, Magnentius secured control across most of the Western Roman Empire. His legitimacy was rejected by the Eastern emperor Constantius II, precipitating a protracted civil war that concluded with Magnentius's defeat and suicide on 10 August 353.
Struck at Trier, this large bronze piece was issued during Magnentius's effort to assert his authority in the West, where he presented himself as a liberator from the tyranny of Constans. The reverse design features two Victories supporting a wreath inscribed "VOT/V/MVLT/X", invoking traditional vows, beneath the accompanying legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAES".
