Historical context

Decius served as Roman emperor from 249 to 251, having been acclaimed by soldiers after suppressing an uprising in Moesia. He defeated Philip near Verona in 249 and received confirmation from the Senate, subsequently seeking to consolidate the Roman state and religion. This coin was minted in AD 250–251 at Viminacium, a prominent military centre and capital of Moesia Superior situated along the Via Militaris in modern Serbia.
