Historical context

Hadrian ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138, belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Throughout his reign, he travelled widely across almost every province of the empire, directly intervening in imperial and provincial matters. As an enthusiastic supporter of philhellenism, he encouraged engagement with Greek communities, and civic mints in regions such as Mysia struck bronze coinage acknowledging his authority between AD 117 and 138.
