Obverse: Laureate bust of Hadrian, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑVΤΟ ΤΡΑΙΑ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟ. Reverse: Athena standing facing, head left, holding Nike in outstretched right hand and left hand on shield placed on ground; behind, a lance; at her feet, owl. Legend: ΜΕΙΛΗΤΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 3.71 g (mean of 4 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 18.3–20 mm (from 5 recorded specimens).

Historical context

This bronze coin was struck between AD 117 and 138 by the city of Miletoupolis, also known as Miletopolis, an ancient town situated in Mysia. It was issued under the Roman emperor Hadrian, who governed the empire from 117 until his death in 138. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Hadrian was a noted philhellene who frequently visited provincial territories and engaged directly in imperial and local provincial affairs.
