Coin in bronze struck at Attaea in Mysia under Hadrian, dated AD 117–138. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 16987 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate head of Hadrian, right. Legend: ΑV[Τ] ΤΡΑΙ [ΑΝΔΡΙΑΝ]ΟϹ. Reverse: Male figure (Heros?) and Zeus; to left nude male figure (Heros?) standing right, left foot on cippus (altar?); to right Zeus, standing facing, head left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, at his feet eagle, standing right; between them, child, standing facing. Legend: ΑΤΤΑΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 16.47 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 31 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

This bronze civic issue was struck by the community of Attaea in Mysia during the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who ruled from 117 to 138. Known formally as Imperator Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus, Hadrian belonged to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His reign was noted for energetic engagement with the provinces, widespread travel across the Roman empire, active intervention in provincial matters, and a strong promotion of philhellenism.
