Historical context

Kyzikos, or Cyzicus, was an ancient Greek town situated in Mysia in Anatolia, positioned on the shoreward side of the Kapıdağ Peninsula. Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted by Emperor Hadrian as his son and successor shortly before Hadrian's death in 138. The reign of Antoninus Pius was noted for its peaceful state across the Roman Empire, experiencing no major revolts or foreign military incursions.
