Historical context

Cyzicus, also known as Kyzikos, was an ancient Greek town situated in Mysia in Anatolia. Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne in 161 alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Aurelius Verus and served as Roman emperor until 180. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he was the last ruler of the Pax Romana. This bronze civic issue was struck at Kyzikos during his joint reign between AD 161 and 169.
