Coin in bronze struck at Kyzikos in Mysia under Commodus, dated AD 180–192. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 17352 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Corn-wreathed bust of Kore Soteira, wearing necklace, r. Legend: ΚΟΡΗ ϹΩΤЄΙΡΑ ΚVΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ. Reverse: Galley with eight rowers and helmsman, left; on prow, Triton holding fish and oar; on stern, two standards topped with eagles; in water, fish (on left) and dolphin (on right). On bow of the ship inscription (ΧΑΙΡΕ ΠΟΛΙ). Legend: ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ ΚVΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 37.32 g (mean of 2 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 43 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Cyzicus was an ancient Greek town situated in Mysia in Anatolia, located on the Kapıdağ Peninsula by the Sea of Marmara. Commodus served as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, reigning alongside his father Marcus Aurelius until 180 and subsequently governing alone until his assassination in 192. During his sole reign, cities throughout the Roman Empire, including Cyzicus, produced civic coin issues under his authority.
