Historical context

Parium, also called Parion, was an ancient Greek city located in Mysia on the Hellespont. Antoninus Pius governed as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted by Emperor Hadrian as his successor shortly before Hadrian's death. This civic bronze coin was struck at Parion during his peaceful imperial reign, a period marked by effective administration and the lack of major revolts or foreign military incursions across the empire.
