Historical context

Parium, also known as Parion, was a Greek city located in Mysia on the Hellespont. Marcus Aurelius became Roman emperor in 161 alongside Lucius Aurelius Verus following the death of Antoninus Pius, reigning until 180. He was a Stoic philosopher and part of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. This civic bronze issue was struck at Parion early in his reign, around AD 161–165.
