Historical context

Commodus ruled as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, first as nominal co-emperor alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently as sole ruler from 180 until his assassination in 192. His sole reign was marked by internal political intrigues and an increasingly dictatorial governance that brought the Nerva–Antonine dynasty to an end. This bronze coin was issued under Commodus around AD 188–190 by the Greek city of Parion in Mysia on the Hellespont.
