Coin in bronze struck at Hadrianeia in Mysia under Commodus, dated c. AD 184–187. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 17577 (issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of bearded Commodus, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΑVΡ ΚΟΜΜΟΔΟϹ. Reverse: Nike and Tyche; to l., Nike advancing, r., holding palm-branch and wreath; to r., Tyche standing, l., wearing kalathos, holding rudder and cornucopia. Legend: ΕΠ ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΙΟV ΛΟV Α ΑΡΧ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΕΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 19.74 g (mean of 2 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 31–32 mm (from 2 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, reigning alone from 180 following the death of his father, Marcus Aurelius. His sole reign marked the end of the Pax Romana and witnessed increasing political intrigues, during which he entrusted administrative affairs to palace officials before his assassination in 192. This civic bronze issue was struck between c. AD 184 and 187 at Hadrianeia in Mysia, a region located in the north-west of ancient Asia Minor along the Sea of Marmara.
