Coin in bronze struck at Pergamon in Mysia under Marc Aurel, dated AD 175–176. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 17769 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Historical context

Pergamon was an ancient city in Aeolis, situated on the north side of the Caicus river. Under the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180, his son Commodus accompanied him during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176 before becoming co-emperor in 177. This bronze civic issue was struck at Pergamon in Mysia in AD 175–176 under Marcus Aurelius, depicting the young Commodus.
