Historical context

Pergamon was a powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis that had served as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period. In AD 175–176, this bronze coin was struck by the city under Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180 as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. The coin features his son Commodus, who accompanied his father on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176 before becoming co-emperor in 177.
