Obverse: Bare-headed bust of youthful Marcus Aurelius, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑVΡΗ ΟVΗΡΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ. Reverse: Nude male (heros?), with his left foot on the rock, leaning forward. Legend: ΑΤΤΑЄΙΤΩΝ. Historical context

Antoninus Pius governed the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161 after being adopted as heir by Hadrian in 138. At Hadrian's request, Antoninus in turn adopted Marcus Aurelius, making him heir to the throne and elevating him to Caesar. This civic bronze coin was struck between c. AD 139 and 146 at Attaea in Mysia, a north-western region of Asia Minor, depicting the youthful heir Marcus Aurelius during Antoninus's peaceful administration.
