Coin in bronze struck at Attaea in Mysia under Antoninus Pius, dated c. AD 147–161. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 17899 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Bare-headed bust of youthful Marcus Aurelius, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: Μ ΑVΡΗ ΟVΗΡΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ. Reverse: Male figure (Heros?) and Zeus; to left nude male figure (Heros?) standing right, left foot on rock; to right Zeus, standing facing, head left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre. Legend: ΑΡΧΩΝ ΑϹΚΛΗ ΑΤΤΑΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 13.15 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 30 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Antoninus Pius ruled as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, a period marked by general peace across the empire. Before his death, Emperor Hadrian had adopted Antoninus as his successor on the condition that Antoninus adopt Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Marcus Aurelius became heir to the throne and married Antoninus's daughter Faustina in 145, later succeeding him alongside Lucius Verus in 161. During Antoninus's reign, civic coinages were produced in provincial centres such as Attaea in Mysia featuring the young heir.
