Historical context
Marcus Aurelius governed the Roman Empire from 161 to 180, initially with his adoptive brother Lucius Aurelius Verus and later with his son Commodus. Commodus had accompanied Marcus Aurelius on campaign during the Marcomannic Wars and became co-emperor alongside his father in 177 at the age of 16. This civic bronze issue from Attaea in Mysia dates to AD 179–180, the final years of their joint rule before Commodus began his sole reign upon his father's death in 180.
