Historical context

Hadrianeia was an ancient town in Mysia, located near modern Dursunbey. Elagabalus, born Varius Avitus Bassianus, ruled as Roman emperor from 218 to 222 after being elevated to power at the age of fourteen through an army revolt arranged by his grandmother Julia Maesa. A member of the Severan dynasty from Emesa, he served as head priest of the sun god Elagabal before his controversial reign in Rome culminated in his death in 222.
