Historical context
Hadrianeia was an ancient town in Mysia, situated near modern Dursunbey in Asiatic Turkey. This civic issue was struck during the reign of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, known as Elagabalus, who served as Roman emperor from 218 to 222 following a revolt against Macrinus. The obverse depicts Annia Aurelia Faustina, an Anatolian Roman noblewoman who became Roman empress during her brief marriage to Elagabalus as his third wife in 221 CE.
