Historical context
Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was an ancient town in northwestern Anatolia situated opposite the delta of the Rhyndacus river. Gordian III reigned as Roman emperor from 238 until his death in 244, having acceded to sole rule at the age of 13. During his reign, provincial civic mints across Anatolia, including those in Mysia, issued coinage under his authority.
