Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Tranquillina, right. Legend: ΦΟVΡ ϹΑΒ ΤΡΑΝΚVΛЄΙΝΑ. Reverse: Hygieia and Asclepius; to left, Hygieia standing right, feeding serpent held in her right hand from patera in her outstretched left; to right, Asclepius standing facing, head left, resting his right hand on serpent-staff. Legend: ЄΠΙ Κ ΦΑΝ ΘЄΜΙϹΩΝΟϹ ΑΡ ΑΔΡΙΑΝЄΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 18.24 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 33.6–35.4 mm (from 3 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Hadrianeia, or Hadriania, was an ancient town in Mysia situated near modern Dursunbey in Asiatic Turkey. Furia Sabinia Tranquillina was Empress of Rome and the wife of Emperor Gordian III, who reigned over the Roman Empire from 238 to 244. This civic bronze coinage was issued under Hadrianeia's local administration during Gordian III's reign between AD 238 and 244.
