Obverse: Laureate bust of Gordian III, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ. Reverse: Artemis advancing right, wearing short double chiton, fluttering cloak and boots, drawing arrow from quiver at shoulderwith right hand and holding bow in left hand; at her feet right, dog leaping right. Legend: ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡ ΑVΡ ΕΡΜΟV ΜΕΙΛΗΤΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 14.21 g (mean of 2 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 30.1–30.6 mm (from 3 recorded specimens).

Historical context

This coin was issued by the city of Miletoupolis, located in the ancient region of Mysia in north-western Asia Minor. The region was situated along the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara. It was struck during the Roman Imperial Period under Gordian III, who became the second-youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire at the age of 13 and ruled from 238 to 244.
