Historical context

Hadrianoi, also known as Hadriani, was built by the Roman emperor Hadrian on a spur of Mount Olympus, near the river Rhyndacus in ancient Bithynia and Mysia. Philip the Arab, born in Shahba, Syria, reigned as Roman emperor from 244 to 249, marking an unusually stable period during the crisis of the third century before his defeat and death at Verona. This civic bronze coinage was struck at Hadrianoi during his reign.
