Historical context

Hadrianoi, or Hadriani, was an ancient city established by the emperor Hadrian on a spur of Mount Olympus, located near the river Rhyndacus. This civic coin was struck there during the reign of Roman emperor Philip the Arab, who ruled from 244 to 249. It portrays his wife, Marcia Otacilia Severa, who was Roman empress during this five-year period and mother to co-emperor Philip II.
