Historical context

Perperene was an ancient Aeolian city in Mysia situated south-east of Adramyttium, known for nearby copper mines and vineyards. Marcus Julius Philippus, known as Philip the Arab, reigned as Roman emperor from 244 to 249 after serving as Praetorian prefect and being acclaimed following the death of Gordian III.
