Coin in bronze struck at Lampsakos in Mysia under Trebonianus Gallus, dated AD 251–253. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 18548 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Volusian, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑΥΤ Κ ΟΥΙΒΙ ΟΛΟϹϹΙΑΝ. Reverse: ithyphallic statue of bearded Priapus standing on base, l., holding cantharus over lighted altar with right hand and long filleted thyrsus with the left hand. Legend: ΛΑΜΨΑΚΗΝΩΝ ЄΠΙ ϹΤΡ ϹΟϹϹΙΟΥ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 5.43 g (mean of 2 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 21.5–22 mm (from 2 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Lampsakos was an ancient Greek city situated on the eastern side of the Hellespont in the northern Troad. This civic bronze issue was struck between AD 251 and 253 under Trebonianus Gallus. It portrays his son Gaius Vibius Volusianus (Volusian), who was elevated first to caesar and then ruled alongside Gallus as co-emperor from 251 until both were killed by their soldiers in August 253.
